I have managed to fail to correctly step off a bus — on a day when there was no snow, no ice, no rain, and the sidewalks were perfectly normal. Apparently I tripped over an invisible turtle on the way out. I landed on my left elbow and knee. This has, apparently, caused a compression fracture in the elbow — although it must be minor because I was sent home from the hospital with an all clear, and someone phoned me 2 days later with a less clear – which is to say a phone call from an orthopedic surgeon letting me know that the intern on duty Monday evening missed a small compression fracture in the elbow while looking at the X‑rays. Everything is therefore being done with one hand — and as I’ve not finished necessary revisions, … Continue reading

Today, the third of the Sun Sword books is now available in audiobook. The narrator is Eva Wilhelm — who thus far has narrated all of the West audiobooks. November – and the latter half of October – were about deadlines. Well, deadline. I have finished the first Severn book, The Emperor’s Wolves, and turned it in to Mira. (At this point, it will be sent to my editor, who will edit and ask for revisions that will add clarity to the book, because sometimes (still), the things that are on the inside of my head have failed to reach the page.) I am working on the next West novel, and will start working on the next Cast novel. And also, I have page proofs for the mass-market edition of Firstborn, which … Continue reading
I have a cover for Cast in Wisdom. I’m (obviously) not going to spoil anything, but will say the setting in which Kaylin finds herself is relevant :). Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I’m going to leave this in the hands of artist Shane Rebenschied and art director, Kathleen Oudit, and I will go back to struggling with words that have not yet reached a stage where they are even a glimmer in the eyes of either.
This month saw my thirtieth wedding anniversary. I finished, and then revised for submission, Cast in Wisdom, and it is, until copy-edits, at Mira. I finished a novella of questionable length (49k), which was one of two short story prompts for the pixel project charity over two years ago T_T. Speaking of short story prompts that were even less short, ahem. Today, I opened the untitled Severn novel, and the untitled first book in The Burning Crown arc. Between the two, there’s 100k words, but I had to put them aside to write Cast in Wisdom and reread all the other West words (which, to be honest, I have not quite finished yet. There’s something vaguely like homework about this, and … I’m not sure I enjoy turning the … Continue reading
I seem to have misplaced April. First: News. I have sold DAW Books the first four novels in the series that is now called The Burning Crown, but which I’ve called The End of Days arc for decades. I have no titles, but do have deadlines — the first of which is July of 2020. That’s when it’s due to the publisher. It’s not a publication date >.<. This is the last arc of the Essalieyan universe. I expect it to be roughly the same as the Sun Sword in length. (Well, no, I originally thought, it’s just these two books, right? I have endings! Greek Chorus: No, Michelle, try to be realistic for once. You thought the Sun Sword was two books, too — Broken Crown and Sun Sword. But I had key endpoints and the first endpoint was … Continue reading
