January was the month in which I vowed I would write the Severn short story that has been owed since, oh, March of last year. However, at 35k words and chapter seven, I realized that this was not actually even a long novella – it’s a novel as it currently stands. So, that is now being discussed with publisher, because: novel. (I’m sorry, Melissa T_T) I have started the second short story I owe from the same period. At the moment, however, I have confidence that this time it will be short, and regardless, length is less of an issue because it doesn’t run afoul of option clauses. I think. (For the record, it’s a short story that takes place in the universe of The Augustine Painters and The Colours of … Continue reading

I thought today was Monday. While telling someone that release day was tomorrow, I realized that tomorrow was actually today, January 23rd, 2018. That’s what January has been like, so far… Cast in Deception is now out in the wild. It is available in ebook and in audiobook, and Khristine Vham is the narrator for the latter (I’m very, very happy about this, and sometimes feel I should nail her feet to the studio floor so she will always be the narrator – and this would, of course, be bad of me).

Many of you have already seen the cover for Cast in Deception in the wild. The artist is, once again, the amazing Shane Rebenschied; the art director is the equally talented Kathleen Oudit. This is the full cover, with back blurb: *** In the good news department: Mira is re-issuing Cast in Shadow and Cast in Courtlight, to coincide with the release of Cast in Deception. They’ll be in trade paperback, with slightly updated covers (fonts, name placement, things like that). *** I have finished page proofs; I haven’t finished the book review column – but I find reading and thinking about books far, far less disruptive to writing than copy-edits or page proofs. Some writers can do both — write first, revise, proof-read — and I envy them enormously. For me, the … Continue reading

Today, Cast in Flight officially launches. It’s available in ebook, audiobook and trade paperback. I’m a little bit behind, which I know will come as a shock to all of you. I am working on (not finished) War and the next Cast novel, which is absent a reasonable title — the working title is Cast in Treachery, but I’m not certain it works. So “Next Cast Novel” is how I will probably refer to it until I have a title that does. I kind of crashed at the end of the Summer, and had zero brain left for anything like productive writing. I always post sample chapters — but this time around, it totally fell off the table, swept out of my head by the lack of functional brain. I’m really sorry =/. When the brain goes … Continue reading

Today is release day for Cast in Honor. For some reason, I thought it was the 27th, which is not today. This is the state of the writer’s brain =/. This isn’t a spoiler thread, as the book just came out — I’ll start a separate spoiler post in a few days. In other news, I have finished the first draft of Grave. I am working on War and Cast in Flight, and neither of those books is trying to murder me, for which I am profoundly grateful. I have just received page proofs for the mass market of Oracle, and am revising Grave for submission to my long-suffering (more long-suffering in my case than any author should have any right to expect) editor, Sheila Gilbert at DAW. And yes, I know I never did … Continue reading
