Happy New Year!

Posted in Academia, Cast, Elantra, Essalieyan, writing, Mira, life.

In 2023 I finished and published Hunter’s Redoubt, the first book in the final sequence of the West universe.

In 2024, I intend to finish The Wild Road. Or at least finish the first draft of the book. It will still have to be revised, editing, copy-edited, proof-read. Having a publisher didn’t mean those things didn’t have to be done, but my part in the doing was much smaller. It was reactive, not active.

But having done it once, I think I’m more aware of what can go wrong, and things should be much smoother.

***

In 2023, I finished Cast in Atonement, but that’s author-finished; the book will be published in, I think, August 2024. 2023 also saw the publication of Shards of Glass.

For me, “finishing” a book is done months before the book is actually available — I use “finish” in the author sense, which simply means I’ve submitted the book. Behind the scenes, the book goes to the editor and returns to me; I revise the book, send it back to the editor. If she thinks my revisions haven’t added the clarity she was looking for, I revise again. The book then goes back to the publisher, and the publisher sends it to be copy-edit.

(During this stage, or a little before, the book is sent to the art director, and the cover is designed and sent to the artist.)

I review the copy-editor’s comments and suggestions. From there it’s sent to the excellent internal proof-reading department. And I review proofreaders comments and the book itself. And then it’s done – for me – until the book is published.

News: I have sold two more Sagara novels to Mira! Cast in Atonement was the final book under the old contracts. So: there will be two more novels.

The next Sagara book I write will be the sequel to the Academia novel, Shards of Glass. I have started that book. Multiple times T_T.

The book after that will be the next Cast novel, which I have not started yet.

In the meantime one of my gifts this year was an apple watch. I have never had an apple watch, and haven’t worn a watch for years.

Because I have never had a watch, it took me a bit to figure it out — and the first thing I did was to choose a watch face. In this case, the Snoopy watch face, because I thought I could stand to see Snoopy and Woodstock on the watch when I looked at the time.

What I did not realize, in choosing that, was that every single time I look at the watch, I get 3 – 5 seconds of actual animation, and the animations are different each time. So I may have spent a bit too much time just … looking at the watch, which makes people around me think I’m being impatient about possibly wasting time >.<.

But I kind of love seeing the various animations. I admit I frequently fail to notice the actual time while looking at them.

And in other plans for 2024: This year, I’ll be heading to Eastercon in the UK as a guest. I’ll be dragging my husband (by invitation from Eastercon) with me because he can hopefully prop me up if I flag :).

I hope you all had a happy holiday, and that those who celebrate Christmas had a Merry Christmas as well. The last of my holiday events is New Year’s dinner; my sister is coming over to cook, and my parents will be here for dinner as well.

And then I will sink into my normal routine of writing and bookstore work, and recharge my people battery.

Thank you all so much for being my readers in 2023!

Fond wishes for a great new year to you and yours, all of the rest of us as well…

  2. Joyce says:

I sincerely hope and wish for your Happy New Year to proceed smoothly. It is so good to hear you upbeat about things. I, too am hopeful for the new year. I found some of my missing mojo and actually managed to stay focused on some projects.

Uhh, I don’t want to rain on this parade but I’ve got to ask. Is Cast nearly over? What happens to Elantra after the next two books? I don’t think I am ready to leave Elantra yet.

  3. Elizabeth KW says:

That’s such great news about more Cast books! I eagerly await the last West book. And a return to Academia. It’s all good!
I too have fun with Snoopy on my Apple watch. Aside from the time, I use the timer function frequently, because I like a wrist haptic than a sound. The flashlight mode is perfect for a low level light if I get up at night.

  4. michelle says:

@Joyce: It is not nearly over, given Atonement. As for what happens when the CAST series is over, I’m not entirely certain. Kaylin’s part in the universe is likely to be finished, though.

My intent with the CAST novels has always been to write them until I have no more stories I want to tell, and then to end things. I’ll talk about it a bit more after people have had a chance to read the finished CAST novel (August 2024).

  5. Elissa Carroll says:

Happy new year to you too Michelle :) I love your work and hearing how you are doing. I believe I own every book you’ve ever wrote and always look forward to the next. May you get recharged and be able to keep a comfortable, not over taxing pace for yourself this year.

  6. Melanie A Allen says:

Awe, hope you find more stories to write…. Happy New Year to you and your family

  7. Estara Swanberg says:

A healthy, peaceful and content New Year to you and your family! Thanks for all the books (to read and still to come)

  8. Steve Faught says:

    Happy New Year!
Glad to hear writerly things are well!
I’m rereading the house books (on Oracle now) so I can read the new Hunter book I got for Christmas 😍.
One of these days I gotta get to TO and find that book store of yours, maybe even bring a dog eared copy of the Hunters Duology to sign.
    Best wishes
    Steve

  9. Joyce says:

I am relieved to know Elantra will continue; now all I have to do is survive until the end (I’m getting a bit long in the tooth). August will be a long time coming and I’m really anxious! Thank you and stay safe and well.

  10. Jazzlet says:

I hope you had a lovely evening with your family, and that recharging your people battery goes smoothly, I love that description of something I need also need after seeing people. Thank you for that and all of your writing, I’m excited for more Cast books, and especially for another Academia novella, I’m worried for Robin ;-)

  11. Hilary says:

Happy New Year to you. So glad to hear there will be more cast novels, I love this world. Loved shards of glass which I got in November in ebook form, I got my paper copy just before Christmas in the U.K. but I was in hospital over that period the dreaded C again, though a different one so this time part of my pancreas and all my spleen were sacrificed to hopefully make me well, being in hospital is not conducive to reading. Home recovering now so hopefully I’ll be able to concentrate enough to read my paper version of Shards. So looking forward to August and the next Cast. Love your books

  12. Grace says:

Has there been any clue given as to what Cast in Atonement will be about?

Secondary question, will Roshan Kaylarr, or any of the unusual children born during Cast on Chaos’ magic surge (the three-eyed child, or the speaking child) ever show up again?

I am very much looking forward to Cast in Atonement and the continuance of the Chronicles of Elantra in any case. I really want to see more of Nightshade and his Castle/Tower again.

  13. Alan T Witty says:

I love the Cast books and have reread them many times. Am looking forward to a new adventure. Having turned 80 in 2023, I am going to make sure I stay around at least until all the Cast stories are told. Alan Witty

  14. Melanie Watson says:

Happy 2024! I have just finished Shards of Glass and quickly went to download the next book only to realise you’ve not written it yet! I will await the new Cast with great excitement but hope that Raven, Robin etc all appear again this year — maybe?

  15. AllysonH says:

Happy New Year! This series of books (including the stories about Severn and the Academia) are my favourites, I read them time and time again, so I’m glad to hear that Mira have bought a couple more. Congratulations! I love the cover of Cast in Atonement — I’ve just seen it and the blurb on Amazon. Can’t wait for August!!

  16. michelle says:

@Melanie: The next Robin & Raven book is the one I’m writing now. The next CAST novel (ATONEMENT) is, I think, August 2024, so probably 2025 for the book I’m writing now.

  17. michelle says:

@AllysonH: I don’t have the blurb, but do have the front cover — they send me a link to it when it starts to go live. Usually, I post the finished cover here when I have it (front and back and spine), though. I can post the front cover here, if people want to see it — but it’s an August title, so it seemed a bit early to do that to me. Which is why I didn’t.

  18. Vicki LENOIR says:

    Hello and happy new year!
If I remember correctly, you had mentioned only 2 Severn books. However, is there a chance of more in that series?

  19. SuE says:

    blurb is on Amazon

  20. michelle says:

@Vicki: I had two stories I wanted to tell. I never actually know what people will like; some readers seem to hate Severn, so I wasn’t sure how they would go. But also, I had no other immediate stories to tell.

My rule for myself is: don’t start a book when you have no core story in mind. (I can have a core story, and the book can diverge and run in an unplanned direction, but I start with story T_T). Also: writing books set in the past when there are 18 books (or 19 if you include SHARDS) set in the present can be tricky.

However! In the never-say-never category of answers: I do have a story I could tell, now. Or the bones of one or two.

  21. Joyce says:

You’re teasing us, Michelle! Is the possibility now, but not before, related to the ‚as yet unknown and still a hundred years away from release, events in Atonement? Or, is it possibly a hint as to who Atonement refers to? I have been very curious about that since so many people have a weight on their shoulder they might feel a need to atone for. Now to return to my pacing and thumb twiddling until August.

  22. michelle says:

@Joyce: No, it’s not related to ATONEMENT. It’s actually related to SHARDS, or rather, one character in SHARDS. Because the Severn stories take place in the past — and moving from past to present is incredibly messy for people who haven’t read the CAST novels — it’s a story that takes place, as the other two Severn books do, in the past.

  23. Elizabeth KW says:

I will keep buying Elantra books of any sort (Wolf, Academia, and of course Cast). I saved Shards for when I knew I could immerse myself. So it’s been my gift of the recent snow!
I am a map lover, so thank you for having one for Elantra One question: where is the garden district? It’s not indicated on the map.
I would love it if there could be a black and white map that could be included in the books.

  24. Katie says:

Thanks for the update and I hope you have a fantastic 2024! I love the Cast series, although I wish there was more Nightshade lately. It feels like he’s kind of fallen by the wayside a little. I need to read Shards, though!

  25. Aquilegia says:

I pretty much dropped off the face of the earth about half a year ago. My dad died, extremely unexpectedly. And grief and depression suck. I have not even read Shards of Glass. I have it. I just can’t make my brain do anything that not vitally necessary unless it is comfort fluff. Which is fine, I will get my feet under me eventually, and I have your excellent book waiting for me when I do.

I just wanted to say, my sister has been using that Snoopy watch face, because my dad loved Snoopy. And seeing you mention it made me smile. And I really appreciate those sparks of joy when I find them. I really need them right now

  26. michelle says:

@Aquilegia: That is so, so hard. I’m so sorry for your loss =/.

Oddly enough, the Snoopy watch is a small and unexpected spark of joy in my life as well. I grew up with Snoopy; we always watched the animated specials (my mother would, on very rare occasions, let us eat dinner *in front of the television*). For the first week, I was constantly checking my watch and people thought I was being aggressively impatient.

  27. Tracy Perkins says:

I just finished Hunters Redoubt in hard back no less and I was so incredibly pleased. Not only was the book dense ( and I love a dense book) but it was fulfilling to the storyline in every way. I’ll be honest that in this new format of self publishing corners might be cut but if anything the book felt complete if that makes sense. Maybe because an outsider publisher wasn’t word counting. I became a Patreon for $5 a month when this started because I really wanted to have a finished story and Michelle is my absolute favorite author. After reading the book I have upped it to $10 a month because as she says I really want her to finish these books. Thank you Michelle for honoring the story above profit and I so look forward to the next one.

  28. michelle says:

@Tracy: Thank you! But I just want to say I never had to cut words deliberately with the West novels at DAW; Sheila wanted shorter books but conversely never demanded that I make the books shorter once she had the finished novel in hand. This was just… much longer than intended. I wasn’t worried about it until it came to print-on-demand printing — and then I was, because while ebooks can contain as many words as one likes, print still can’t =/.

In this new format of publishing, what is lost is the bookstore accessibility. Print readers who don’t know about the book, won’t find it when they’re browsing in stores. It’s the one thing that self-publishers simply will not have access to: print distribution. The books *can* be special ordered by any bookstore that cares to order them, but won’t generally be stocked.

But I’ve been very lucky with Patreon support, and I’ve been able to publish the book as if it were otherwise published by DAW.
