I had really hoped to be able to write this yesterday, because I could then tell myself it was still July. But, it’s not July, it’s the beginning of August. When I went to Australia, War was at 340k words. I thought it would be 30k words to the end. Where in this case, thought probably means “prayed”. This is not, as you know from the last blog post, what happened. Today, I have typed the figurative “THE END” on War. It is, as it currently stands, 430k words. This is too long. Not necessarily for readers, but my poor, poor editor. And publisher. So while I have typed “THE END”, my part in that book is not yet over. I have to revise, fix the eight … Continue reading

Today, Cast in Flight officially launches. It’s available in ebook, audiobook and trade paperback. I’m a little bit behind, which I know will come as a shock to all of you. I am working on (not finished) War and the next Cast novel, which is absent a reasonable title — the working title is Cast in Treachery, but I’m not certain it works. So “Next Cast Novel” is how I will probably refer to it until I have a title that does. I kind of crashed at the end of the Summer, and had zero brain left for anything like productive writing. I always post sample chapters — but this time around, it totally fell off the table, swept out of my head by the lack of functional brain. I’m really sorry =/. When the brain goes … Continue reading

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything. I apologize for that. I have, on the other hand, been writing. I finished Grave and sent it to my editor, and she sent it back with revision notes (when I say notes, I mean phone call), and one of those revisions is a single sentence long and…not so small. And Cast in Flight was not finished, so I set Grave aside to percolate and finished Cast in Flight. And then, because it was — I know this will shock you all — way too long, I then spent the time cutting 11k words, and sent the book to my editor. And then I read books, and wrote a review column for F&SF. During that time, I continued to plug away on War, the only book that is not somehow killing … Continue reading

I know I’ve been conspicuously absent lately. I’ve been working on Grave, and I am almost finished it. But people have emailed to remind me that we’re close to release date and there are no Cast in Honor chapters. Here they are :)

Actually, let me start with the news first: Mira has bought two more Cast novels! I only have a tentative title for one: Cast in Flight. Which is all I’ll say about it until after Cast in Honor is published. — — — Here is the cover for Cast in Honor, by the inimitable Shane Rebenschied. I love this cover. I mean, I love love LOVE it. I try not to tease about covers or things I can’t share yet — but even I had to mention it when I first saw it because there’s only so many times you can bounce up and down in your household before all of your family starts avoiding you. No, I did not count the exact number of times — I wasn’t thinking Science at the time :).
