I appear to have missed the month of June =/. This month, I turned in Cast in Oblivion. I have not turned in Firstborn yet, but will hopefully finish it before the end of this month; it was more complicated to split the book than I’d originally intended, and required a couple of running starts, but I am now on the (new) last chapter. I am very glad that I don’t have to worry about the length of the book, since it was the shorter half of the split. Jody Lee, the cover artist, finished the emergency Unplanned Novel cover before I finished the revision >.>. I will share when I can. I am writing the first Severn novel next, Elantra-wise. The next Cast novel should be about Bellusdeo and … Continue reading

I have been writing. And revising. I am almost finished Cast in Oblivion in first draft. Almost. I am half-way through the revisions necessary to make Firstborn a book – although that’s a best guess, because it’s not as exact a metric. Doing my taxes did not, demonstrably, kill me. I have not heard back about the Severn books, beyond yes we do want them. So: unless something changes in the future, they will happen. The minute I have certain news, I will share it. I used to think that “still writing” was … not very much of an update. I felt a bit self-conscious about posting “still writing” news – I assumed that people would assume that I was still writing, and there was therefore nothing of substance to report to them. But: some news. At the end … Continue reading
I finally have news to report about War. TL;DR (too long; didn’t read, for those who aren’t accustomed to this particular Internet short-hand): The book I submitted to DAW is now going to be two books: Firstborn, which will be published in February 2019 and War, which will be published in June 2019. ______ For those who want the longer details, they are as follows. (I didn’t originally intend to have the shorter recap, but — it’s a long post, and I accept that some people don’t actually want author musings or groveling; they just want to know when they can read the book they’ve been waiting for. Since I am sometimes one of those readers, I’m sympathetic.) I mentioned some time back that I had finished and submitted War to … Continue reading
January was the month in which I vowed I would write the Severn short story that has been owed since, oh, March of last year. However, at 35k words and chapter seven, I realized that this was not actually even a long novella – it’s a novel as it currently stands. So, that is now being discussed with publisher, because: novel. (I’m sorry, Melissa T_T) I have started the second short story I owe from the same period. At the moment, however, I have confidence that this time it will be short, and regardless, length is less of an issue because it doesn’t run afoul of option clauses. I think. (For the record, it’s a short story that takes place in the universe of The Augustine Painters and The Colours of … Continue reading
I’ve been going back and forth with myself (and possibly fretting at other people in my household who were foolish enough to vacate the room after the first sentence). About what, you ask? About posting a preview chapter – in this case, the prologue – of War. I haven’t had the revision discussion with my editor yet; I hope to do that after the holiday break. So the fretting is mostly whether or not what I post will survive in the published book. I mean, it’s not much of a preview if it doesn’t actually serve as a preview of the book itself. It’s kind of a hopeful preview, but uncertainty abounds. Since the book is very very long in its current state, there are words that might not survive to reach … Continue reading
