Cover Reveal for WAR

Posted in writing.

I know that Firstborn hasn’t yet been released — less than a week to go! — but I really had to share this.

I love this cover.

I love the art.

Jody Lee did this before the cover for Firstborn, because she had the whole messy book from which to work.

And when we decided to split the book, she had to come up with a cover for Firstborn because this cover would not work for Firstborn; it’s the end of book/series cover.

I love it, did I mention?

ETA: WAR is, according to the internet, coming on 18 June, 2019.

In miscellaneous things I don’t love: the dentist. I mean, my dentist is a lovely man, and I’ve been going to his office since I was six — but today, I will be going to his office for a protracted period as I have a cavity at the very back of the upper right molar.

My dentist is the only person ever to tell me I have a small mouth. Which makes working on my teeth more difficult. And it makes this location incredibly painful (for him) because it’s hard to reach. To be fair to me, it’s hard for me to reach as well.

I’m not sure who was closer to tears when he discovered a cavity there – me or him. Jury is still out.

    So amazing! Thanks for sharing!

  2. Patrick says:

Awesome cover. Jody Lee always does an amazing job. This just wets my appetite for both books even more. Thank God only 5 more days til Firstborn

  3. Kerry aka Trouble says:

Jody Lee does do awesome work! I have loved her art for ages.
Split the book — that explains where Firstborn came from — for a long time it’s been saying War is the next book. Looking forward to both of them as I just finished Cast in Oblivion a couple days ago.

  4. Patrick says:

    Best Valentine’s Day present ever

  5. KimWarren says:

I am rereading the ENTIRE series. Just started on the Hidden City. My husband is listening along with me and I am SO happy to be back in this world!!!

  6. michelle says:

@Patrick: you know, I totally forgot it was Valentine’s Day. It’s been Dental Day of Doom all morning. And then the cover arrived, so it’s also been Excited About Cover since then :D

  7. michelle says:

@KimWarren: Thank you :D. Also, I hope your husband realizes that it’s not a short endeavor…

  8. Lore says:

I just finished Oblivion. I love seeing Kaylin’s character growth over the last few books. And Nightshade is still my favorite. Can’t wait for the next one!

Will start reading this series in the meantime!

  9. LaraB says:

I love this cover. I love Jody Lee’s cover art in general, but I *really* love this cover. It’s incredibly powerful. I’m super excited for Firstborn, and now I’m even more excited for War. Happy Cover Art Day!

Sorry to hear about the dentist. I have a small jaw and big teeth (yay genetics) so my own dentist went through similar pains when I had to have a couple crowns done in my upper back molars. It wasn’t fun for me either, but she was about to go on maternity leave, and I’m pretty sure her back was killing her by the time she finished.

  10. Tyronne Hodgins says:

BEAUTIFUL!!!! Stunning and powerful!!! I am not counting the days/hours. This is the second of four books I am anxiously awaiting this year and I’ve already read Oblivion — twice! Thank you Michelle and thank you Jody Lee for this cover. Wow!

  11. Darbie says:

Love the cover hate to ask all questions r answered or where r we going next in our journey with Jewel?

  12. DeDe says:

Gorgeous! btw — My husband and I call it the Happy Red Heart Hallmark Day.

  13. Joey says:

    Yay cover!

Y’know, another option would be to extract the tooth. It would make room, too.

  14. Carol Duffy says:

Love the cover. Just love it. Can’t wait to read both Firstborn and War; in the meantime I have begun a re-read of the Cast series to see what breadcrumbs I might have missed. Three books in one year is such a gift. Thank you for the wonderful work. ( And, btw, still team Nightshade ).

  15. ralphw2548 says:

I have always loved the work of Jody Lee.
So, getting two more of her covers is nirvana!
FirstBorn is due out this month. Any idea when War will come out?

    ps.
My dentist loves my big mouth :)

  16. michelle says:

It’s a back molar generally considered essential for chewing, Joey >.

  17. michelle says:

@ralph WAR is in theory scheduled for June of 2019.

Also, don’t take this the wrong way, but I don’t like you >.

  18. michelle says:

@Darbie: WAR is the final volume of the House War series, if that’s what you were asking — but as for the rest, people will burn me in effigy (if I’m that lucky) if I spoil the end of the series, so.

  19. Tchula says:

Omg, I adore this cover! Jewel looks awesome and just how I would picture her. Jody Lee never disappoints! I cannot wait until my copy of Firstborn arrives, and as soon as Amazon gets the hard copy of War available for pre-order, I’m so there!

Good luck at the dentist’s office. I’ve had some older fillings replaced recently, and while I don’t exactly have a small mouth (lol) it’s still no fun. ;-)

  20. liathano says:

    beautiful

  21. Gorgeous. There’s a reason why I discovered DAW in the late 80s with the help of Jody Lee (and Tom Deitz — is the spelling I think) covers.

Also, even then a lot of her covers were for female written work, so two birds with one stone ^^.

I now own a tiny bust oil painting which she sold on Etsy once (these days I believe her shop is only for her glassblowing work). I would have loved to buy any number of originals of her work, especially of some of your and some of Mercedes Lackey covers.

    Wohoo, book!

  22. Oh and I wish you both all the best of luck and ease with regards to your teeth. I have been avoiding the dentist for years and I know it will bite me in the ass in the long run, but I can’t make myself go unless I’m in tears from the pain (at which point the anaesthetics usually don’t work any more)

  23. Aelynn says:

The cover for War is indeed lovely and I can’t wait to buy it in June. I also completely empathize about your dental woes. I have the same problem and it’s excruciating for my dentist as well. I do hope yours manages to cope better somehow.

  24. Emile De Antonio says:

Your very best cover! Love it!! But you may have to deal with cranky people buying the last book in the series w/o having read the ealier ones! You should warn the publisher to have stock of Hidden City on hand. My profound sympathy over the tooth; it’s good to catch it early.

  25. michelle says:

@Emile: I’m certain that people will know because the book will say: FINAL VOLUME somewhere on the flap or the back cover :).

And the cavity was very small, so in spite of its location, was painless, for which I’m hugely grateful.

  26. Lisette says:

Is it coincidence that the name of the the trees in the Common reads like a diminutive of Kaylin’s Name?

  27. michelle says:

@Lisette: Until you mentioned it, I hadn’t noticed T_T. So, definitely unintentional. I think it’s because, for me, it’s a whole word, so all of the syllables count, if that makes any sense at all?

  28. Lisette says:

It does, if I think of words as shapes or symbols, and not sounds.

  29. Darbie says:

    Thank you Michelle-
Honestly your books I am currently rereading all your books that affect jewel. Yessss looking for breadcrumbs have been counting down day til firstborn and now counting down to WAR soooo excited 😍
I appreciate what went into them as a lifelong reader I know bad books and yours are 10/10.
Will the people of bredonair be in War????
Is kirial, Margret, Diora or coming to help in WAR???

  30. michelle says:

    Ummm, no.

The House War is complete with the characters that have been in the book since the start.

Margaret, Yollana, Kiriel, Stephen and his huntbrother, and the northern people will continue in the last arc. I needed to know where Jewel would be before I continued with the final apocalypse.

  31. chibipoe says:

Yay! Kiriel! I am eager to see if she’s going to get to meet her half-sister.
