Thank you!

Posted in Elantra, writing.

When I posted last, I kind of expected maybe 10 – 15 replies. I got a lot more than that, and it was helpful. The Sagara book I’m working on now is the sequel to Shards of Glass.

The next book will be the next Cast novel.

I’ll let the other possible books cook in the background, because books need some cooking time for me. If I start a book from zero, it takes me far, far longer to find the book.

The reason I mentioned Nightshade in the context of the cohort is Annarion. So very much of Nightshade is wrapped up in Annarion — Annarion was, in many ways, his driving force. And Annarion is still upset with him, which is a bit ironic considering what the cohort had been planning before they met Kaylin.

But Annarion adored his older brother. Trusted him. Respected him. More Barrani siblings are like Sedarias’s than Annarion’s. Like many younger siblings whose older siblings are the source of respect & admiration, the disappointments are much larger than perhaps is entirely fair. And there are things that are entwined, as well, with The Lady. With the consort, who can survive calling Nightshade by his name, because of her very essential position. With the Barrani High Court and its constitution.

But I may be able to tell parts of that story within the main Cast books.

I am not the world’s slowest writer – but I can’t really write faster than I currently write. It’s just… so many different stories screaming for attention in Michelle’s writer-brain >.<

I’d love it if you could share whatever parts of Nightshade’s story you can in the main Cast books.

As to not being the slowest writer, well, we all know that! (Several fantasy authors spring to mind!) I love your writing: your world building and characters are second to none. If you, Patricia Briggs, and Ilona Andrews published a book every week, I still would want more. I truly appreciate anything you write and am very happy to wait.

  2. Marie says:

Nightshade. One of your most interesting character.

  3. Mathew says:

Personally, I’d much prefer keeping Nightshade to the Cast books as he’s such a central pillar to Kaylin’s entire story. I view the Cast books as the main trunk where all the others are (Shards & Wovles)are just limbs on a tree. Super interesting and feeding to the main story arc. In some cases, I just want a slow burn for Nightshade/Kaylin as if/when their story ever has an ending I feel its kind of like the end of Kaylins own journey. However, I’m also happy that slow burn to take another 20 books or more :) Please keep them coming.

Also, the fact that you feel their are so many more stories to tell raises my hopes that I will continue to enjoy Elantra for many years to come.

  4. Elissa Carroll says:

Always interested in Nightshade! Partially because I’m interested in Kaylins “love” story. It would be really great to see her moving through and working on her trauma to be at a place of less reactivity. As someone with many shared traumas of hers, it would make my heart glad.
Happy to wait for your wonderful books Michelle :)

  5. Michele L Frogge says:

Me personally would like to know more about Sevren. He is such a mysterious character.

  6. Asia says:

There is so many interesting angles for Nightshade, his relationship with Kaylin, with his brother with Lady but also him as Lord is his very special Castle… Definitely happy with seeing those stories within Cast novels!! But as I said before I will read both cast and around cast stores, love your writing and Elantra world:)

  7. Kathy Scappace says:

This isn’t a complaint. I seem to remember that Cast in Wisdom was going to be near the end of the series. Are you going to write the Ravellon story? Or has that been tabled?

  8. Elizabeth says:

I look forward to any new book set in Elantra. I’d like more Nightshade, but I think only as a part of new Cast novels. Here’s to more happy reading.

  9. Dorthy Redmond says:

Would love more of Severn but also Nightshade

  10. hsmyers says:

My preference is the usual suspect, ‘more’. As a reader and fan, I believe that is expected…

  11. Nevada says:

Your characters are always so well drawn, so multi-faceted and complex — I just enjoy them. Nightshade is one of my favorites, he’s right up there with Lord Isladar. I do tend to favor the morally grey characters. I save your books as palate cleansers for when I’m in a book slump so I can look forward to, instead of being impatient for, them. :D It means I’m always behind the release, but I’m good about avoiding spoilers.

As an aside — I really appreciate your effort in finding a way to finish these stories. I’m not sure many other authors would have, so thank you.

  12. My preference is that you continue to write the way you write. Follow the characters whereever they lead you.

My only difficulty with the writers whose work draws me in, is that reading is so much faster than writing. ;)

  13. Briana says:

I enjoy my vacations to Elantra. Always fun to spend time with my friends there.

  14. Debra Holcomb says:

Looking forward to the next cast novel, and the next, etc. Thank you for the grand adventures. If only we could clone you, we could have twice as many books.

  15. Anna M Wick says:

I’m ready when you are. Not your fault some of the authors I try in the mean time just don’t build world/characters like yours, and they usually sink when compared.

  16. katwiccan says:

If you write it, I will read it. Thank you

  17. Atusa says:

Michelle, I love Nightshade as a character and he is one of the main reasons that I read your Cast novels. If at all possible, It would be a treat to have a book or books completely dedicated to exploring his character and past. I love your Severn books and eagerly look forward to read more of them. Thank you for continuing and keeping the Cast series strong and engaging until this far, Not many authors can do this and I’m glad that I’ve found your series.

  18. Kim says:

Yes the more loved the brother the greater disappointment when they fall off their pedestal. It will be good to have more Nightshade and the lady.

I will read whatever you provide and be grateful for the trip through your imagination.

I wanted to respond to your last post but have been busy with work and my own small project of replacing old furniture and having a contractor in during the two weeks I voluntarily lived without living room and bedroom furniture. But the contractor is gone for now until June hopefully when I stress myself out (and the cats) While he finishes the rest of the house. It’s starting to come together now though.

But a planned renovation has nothing on that unplanned one you’ve been dealing with! Plus breaking the toe again!

I just wanted to say I think Elantra and Kaylin are my favorite of all your books though ive read your West novels too. I sometimes have trouble shifting my brain from a favorite character in a series to a focus on a new one no matter how much I like the world or character if they play a role in the standing series. But I totally enjoyed the Wolves and Magic School spin offs.

I think I’d read anything in the world you wanted to explore. I will admit Nightshade isn’t my favorite character. Once I stumbled across some fanfic based on Elantra and all the stories shipped Nightshade and Kaylin for some unfathomable reason. But thier idea of Nightshade being a loving and doting husband and father (frequently to twins!) wasn’t the same Nightshade character that lives in my head.

All that aside I would be curious about his history, not the near or current history but the ancient one. Before he was shunned and fought wars with Dragons alongside Teela. For that matter I’m equally fascinated by Teela’s history though maybe more what drove her to leave society and go slumming with mortals and the Hawks.

I also really like the Emporer and all the dragons, but their story is probably in super ancient times with the founding of his hoarde and the last flight of dragons within its borders.

But I’d probably read a story about less exciting characters like Caitlin or what’s his name The Hawklord’s secretary. They probably get all the dirt and gossip at the highest levels. Marcus would be pretty cool too since it’s already established he already is going against societal norms.

So yeah, if you write it I’ll totally read it.

  20. Maia says:

Nightshade was always my most beloved character, with all of his flaws. I am behind two, now maybe three, books in the series, too much stuff happening at this time, and I am planning to buy the series in paper so I will do Big Reread (first five books probably for forth or fifth time :‘D) and continue with new books along the way. Anyway, can’t wait, hopefully some bookstore here in Czech rep. will have/help me order the books now that bookdepository is caput. :’)

Anyhoo, writing is work of love, take all the time you need, rereads are here to help us in the meantime. :D
