Cast in Ruin Chapter Two

Posted in Cast, Elantra, Luna.

I hope people aren’t getting tired of seeing this cover, because it’s one of my favourites in the series to date. Which is not, of course, why I’m posting it again.

No, I’m posting it because so many people have asked, here and in email, if I could just possibly post Chapter Two before the book’s release date. I can’t think of any harm it could do, and yes, Chapter One ended in an unfortunate place — which was honestly not my intent, because I didn’t really write Chapter One thinking of it as a separate entity, the way a short story is.

Here, without further preamble, is Cast in Ruin Chapter Two. Enjoy!

I will be sitting here at my computer working on the other half of today’s writing, which has been going very slowly thanks to allergies and the type of sleep allergies sometimes cause. I am certain my children are grateful that I spent time preparing Chapter Two instead of being cranky, grouchy mom <wry g>.

Huzzah! My first earthquake *and* Chapter 2 of Cast in Ruin? What a banner day!

  2. Kathy says:

Oh thank you so much for chapter 2! I’ve been having the month from hell and reading this really gave me a lift.

  3. Kerri Knorr says:

    Oh, happy, happy evening!

  4. Carol Duffy says:

What a treat! Thank you so much!

  5. And as I just said elsewhere on the internet, I’m at that point in Peril where I suddenly look askance at every word I’ve written in a state of gloomy despair. I have reached that point for every book I’ve written, so I know it’s part of the process of writing — but it’s not, believe me, the fun part. So it’s nice to be able to do something that I’m certain some of my readers will love

  6. ElizabethN says:

    chapter 2 — yeah!

  7. Jenni says:

Oh my goodness thanks so much!

  8. Christina says:

Argh!!! I can’t wait to read the rest of it!!! Soooo excited :)

  9. Michael says:

Thank you for that. I really enjoyed it. Still a good amount of tension, but less concern that Kaylin is going to commit one of the legal forms of suicide. Also, “Morning happened” is a *great* turn of phrase.

  10. Mark Galpin says:

Pure awesomeness. One of the things I love about Kaylin’s life (from a reader’s perspective) is how its complexity just seems to build in that particularly normal awful way Real Life goes.

  11. Tyronne says:

Hi Michelle! Thank you for posting Chapter Two. I fully understand everyone wanting this chapter after you posted Chapter One which I found extremely funny even if the ending left one anxiously wanting more. But.….the ending of Chapter Two in its own way is just as frustrating as the end of Chapter One!!!! I’m sure you realized that when you posted it and I’m sure that upon reflection, it brought a huge smile to your face! I am most anxious for this next chapter to released so I can pick it up and spend several hours enjoying myself and I delve into this fantastic world you’ve created! Keep up the GREAT work! Thank you.

  12. Christy says:

Thank you, thank you! I’m so pysched for the next release — my productivity dropped to zero last week because I re-read the series, then re-read chapter 1 of Ruin. And have been stalking your blog since, in hopes of seeing chapter 2. Sept 22nd can’t get here fast enough. :)

  13. yen says:

thank you thank you thank you! I had started re-reading Cast in Chaos in preparation for Sept. 22 so it was super nice to get a little advance reading this morning.

  14. Genna Warner says:

As everyone else here stated, THANK YOU! But it didn’t lessen the need/want/desire for the rest of the book. Sept. 20th cannot come soon enough.

  15. Hilda says:

To those of you who gave me extensive Basic 101 classes on “I Readers”, thanks a lot. This past Sunday I was the happy recipient of the latest Color Nook thanks to my 3 grown up kids. They were told that Michelle is first on the list after the Bible. By the way, this birthday was in downtown Luisa, VA. Yes, same one in the news, less than 10 miles from the epicenter. They said it was felt in Toronto??? Son and family are doing OK; house has some minor damage. NOW, I“m going straight to find out if Kaylin used that nice looking sword in a very nasty Dragon. Michelle, this is a birthday present too. Thank you!

  16. Michelle says:

Yea!!!!! I’ve been re-reading and re-reading the series for the last week and a half trying to feed my fix while waiting for the new book to come out. Can’t wait!

  17. MaryW says:

Thank you. I have ordered the book and can’t wait to read the rest. I may have to order the ebook as well. I do not like to wait for my book to arrive.

  18. Tracey says:

Thank you for chapter 2! It gave me something to do during our storm tonight. I’ve pre-ordered from Amazon and can’t wait to get my paws on that book.

Hilda, glad to hear you’re alright. I’m in Toronto and the earthquake gave my house a little shake. It felt like someone grabbed my chair and pulled it backwards. Sitting through a tornado watch right now. Been an odd week.

  19. DG says:

This book can’t release fast enough, lol! I think I’ve run through all your books in every series, the only ones left are the short stories! I was very happy to get a chapter 2, totally unexpected. Oh Sanabalis, I totally dig that dragon.

    DG,
    Self-Proclaimed President of Team Nightshade

  20. Danita says:

Oh yummy! Thank you Michelle! Great chapter, love the interactions among characters I adore. It’s a great sign when you can’t decide who your favorites are among the characters. Hope you get over the hate every word phase quickly. Danita

  21. w-b says:

Your awesome thats all I have to say.. except I can not wait for the book to be released. I know what I am getting for my birthday LOL

  22. silentmum says:

    How about chapter 3, 4, 5, 6,7, 8,9.….….……and all the rest

  23. Estara says:

I’m so looking forward to being finally able to read this ^^ in full (but thank you for the lovely excerpts) — Angela James rated it her usual four stars for this series at GoodReads.com, so I expect — since I like your books even more and this series is five stars for me — I’ll rate it five stars again ^^. September is a good book month for me ^^

  24. natasha says:

oh thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!!! Although now i want chapter 3 but at last i’ll have to wait for it. :)

  25. Corine says:

Oh thank you! I’m so looking forward to this book.

  27. ae says:

truthfully, we would probably love whatever you wrote, regardless of your own opinion of it! :D

  28. hello,

    kate

  29. Tess says:

Thank you so much! both chapters are awesome! cannot wait to get my hands on the whole book ))

  30. Kyra says:

I halfway suspect I’m not going to get to class on the 20th, I’m going straight to the bookstore and buying this, and then I’m going to sit in the car and read it in the parking lot.

  31. Alecia says:

Can you suggest to your editor to sublicense the books to Easton Press to get leather bound editions? I have them in paperback and e‑book, but I need them in hardcover (paperbacks fade, e‑book gets deleted, but hardcovers last).

  32. Any form of hardback would be good :)

  33. mariem says:

I pre-ordered mine on amazon.com,and I recieved an email today saying that it has been SHIPPED !!! IT’s gonna be here on MONDAY.

  34. shibailan says:

Thank you so much for posting Chapter 2 — I’ve read through it twice and think it starts off great. By the way, I’ve pre-ordered on amazon.com as well, but Germany seems to receive the books a bit later — should be in my postbox October 4th… I can’t wait!!

  35. Meagan says:

Thank you so very much for posting both chapters — I happily received my copy of Cast In Ruin, late this morning and already finished it (for those of you who think being a fast reader is a blessing or a gift…it is as much of a double edged sword as ‘slow’ reading is). Now I will probably be hitting my head against a wall for the better part of a year until the next book comes out, but I wanted to say I loved Cast In Ruin. Looking forward to seeing how everything continues.

I hope this is the ‘proper’ place to post this…if not, my apologies, but I have been debating leaving a reply for some time now so here goes nothing.

  36. Hilda says:

Before I saw Meagan’s message I went to my porch with the clear hope of finding my Ruin book which I ordered months ago. NOTHING !!!!! Sorry Meagan, I don’t feel too friendly now, just jealous. And, even though I read fast, I can’t read that fast. I read Michelle’s books going back and forth; by the time I finish them I had read them like 3 times. I just went back to my porch and the mail box. Nothing.
    (Sigh!!!)

  37. kyrias says:

This *is* the prettiest cover of them all. I have all of them, so I can say this with extreme prejudice and certainty. Can Kaylin look like this from now on? :P I can’t wait, cannot cannot cannot wait until Peril comes out. When is it supposed to come out?
