The Wild Road — cover

Posted in covers, Jody Lee, The Burning Crown, The Wild Road.

This has not been the best year, and I feel that I’ve been under water for most of 2025. But this morning it occurred to me that I’ve never posted the cover for The Wild Road here, so first things first.

Cover art by Jody Lee.

The Wild Road is the second book in the series; it follows Hunter’s Redoubt.

I have been working on the third book, but ‘working’ means starting it over and over again. But this morning when I woke up, I had that flash of insight that meant I’d been starting from the wrong place. Again.

All West novels do this. To be fair to me, much of April was taxes and house repairs and copy edits (Cast in Blood) — the first attempt of which was entirely eaten by Microsoft Word to my utter despair. On the day it happened, I almost emailed my editor to tell her that she could just approve everything. Or burn it. I spent six hours fruitlessly searching system files and invisible folders, and my long suffering husband did the same, but in UNIX. Instead, I slept on it (late), and then started to redo everything I’d lost – and I did nothing else for several days.

My writer brain has therefore been running around like a headless chicken.

My author brain, which is the brain that remembers to, oh, post covers here, has been on life support.

In the meantime: Jody Lee cover!

    It’s beautiful!

Dear Michelle, I totally understand the experience of losing tons of work, having to do it over, and feeling like my life seems to consist of working, sleeping (sometimes), eating (maybe), and reworking, and then sort of talking to real people occasionally. Talking with characters and trying to get the universe in my mind to show up properly on paper can be a special form of exhaustion. You are to be sincerely applauded for continuously showing up and putting in your heart, soul, (tears, blood, screaming into a pillow), and respect into everything you do. We will continue to love you and support you how we can.

I’m behind on reading all your projects because I’ve also spent most of the last ten months underwater but I still include you in my prayers (when I remember them; sometimes a week whooshed by and I’m like “oh, what? Wasn’t it just Monday? How come it’s the weekend again?”) and I am grateful each time you send an update. Sending a hug or a high-five, whichever will be the better to cheer you up with. :)

For what it’s worth, I think you’re awesome.

  4. Catherine Shenoy says:

I haven’t started the series and can’t wait!

I loved “‘working’ means starting it over and over again.” I don’t know how many starts I need to make something happen! Each attempt is just part of the process. It helps to see that it’s not just me!

  5. Chris G. says:

Sorry to hear that so much is going on, my sympathies.

    I appreciate the cover, thanks!

If there will be a HC release somewhere (hopefully) then does anyone yet know where it’s best to order that?

  6. Nancy says:

Michelle, it has been that kind of a year so far! Please take a deep breath and slow down for 5 minutes, just once in a while. Take care of you!

  7. Lance says:

That cover looks sooo dope! Good luck to you getting some mental relief, Michelle. We’re all looking forward to this good stuff!

  8. This was a roller coaster of a ride, so many interconnected strands of the people involved becoming clearer, although I’m not sure if I see Stephen or Gervanno as the focus of that particular group (I am sure that Gervanno would say it was Stephen, no question) — I think I was able to relate to Gervanno more? I also loved getting more of an insight of the circus master, but as always with your books I want to read what happens next right away, heh. So glad I joined your Patreon and can make these books happen.

  9. michelle says:

@Nancy: I tend to slow down and take a deep breath when things are finished, but when things aren’t finished, I feel like slowing down isn’t quite acceptable. But… I slow down anyway, so it’s a bit of a bad feedback loop =/. I can usually manage things better, but this year has really tested my ability to put one foot in front of the other.

  10. michelle says:

@Chris G: Yes, there will be a hardcover, in keeping with Hunter’s Redoubt. And a trade paperback. I know some people found the trade paperback too expensive for a paperback — but because it’s Print On Demand, the price is defined by… book length. And the West novels are not short =/

  11. Lee says:

MS, I feel your pain about the lost work. Consider switching to Mac — it’ll change your life because you’ll never have to worry about this horror again. That and the time saved — plus ease of use and seamless integration across devices — will totally outweigh whatever Apple qualms you may have. Promise :)

Can’t wait for Heir of Light.

  12. michelle says:

@Lee: I’m sorry I wasn’t clearer. I write on a Mac. The Microsoft problem was with Microsoft Word, which is, unfortunately, industry standard for publishers. The manuscript I received was half-protected; I could not change any copy-editor comments or revisions, but could change the actual text or add comments of my own.

I’m not sure if this caused problems in preserving the document – but it was an MS Word problem, not a MS system problem =/

  13. Lee says:

Ah, I see. One would think in 3 decades MSW (Microsoft Word, not the author ;) would have introduced autosaving or some kind of safety net. I haven’t used it in over a decade, but the trauma memory is still there :/
OT: I’m rereading Heir of Light and it is a fantasy masterwork.

  14. HB says:

this is a pretty cover, I enjoy reading your books and hope to read this series! Take care and be positive.

  15. br60103 says:

I just had 2 emails that my copy is being shipped.
It looks like I pre-ordered it twice!

Will returning one copy count against michelle’s best-selling status?

  16. br60103 says:

Sorry. Last comment posted in wrong thread.
