World Fantasy convention & Audio Book News

Posted in Audio books, Elantra, Luna.

I will be attending the World Fantasy Convention in San Diego this year. It’s a slightly different convention than the norm, and while I’ll be participating in the big Author Signing (it’s usually Friday night), I won’t be on panels. I will be wandering around the convention, though.

I will also, the day before WFC starts, be attending an informal meet-and-greet with a number of other authors at Mysterious Galaxy, on Wednesday the 26th of October. Since WFC has been sold out for months and months (Neil Gaiman is the Guest of Honor), if you are in and about San Diego, come say hello :).

And the Audio Book News

When I was at the Word on the Street (and knocking over pizza boxes — it was an accident because I’m clumsy when slightly excited. Oh, who am I kidding. I’m clumsy, period), I met Tara, who, among many things, is one of the people at HLQ who deals with Audible.

She just sent me email to let me know what the current Audible release schedule for the Cast audio books looks like. The list didn’t come with list prices, so I’m not certain how things are priced at Audible – whether individually or as part of an audible subscription. I confess I don’t listen to audio books because, among other things, I don’t have a driver’s license, so I am not taking long drives in cars (a place that seems absolutely ideal for listening to them).

On October 1st:

Cast in Moonlight.

This surprised me because I hadn’t heard about this, but I’m happy to see it done. It’s still technically a novella, at 39.6k words (official break point being 40k).

On November 1st:

  • Cast in Shadow
  • Cast in Courlight
  • Cast in Secret
  • Cast in Fury

On December 1st:

  • Cast in Silence
  • Cast in Chaos
  • Cast in Ruin

So, by year end, all of the Cast books will be available as audiobooks. (ETA: This was actually also the first time I’d heard about Chaos and Ruin in audio book format as well, which is why this is the first time I’m mentioning them. For some reason, this seemed less surprising to me.)

Woot! Good news. Does this mean that future Chronicles of Elantra books will be available in audio as well?

  2. Re: Audible, Generally they price things based on list, knock off a percentage for people with Audible accounts who want to pay money, and then additionally translate that price into some number of “credits” that people get with their subscriptions. I’ve rarely seen items that are more than 1 credit, usually it’s stuff that’s more than 40 bucks list (and very popular. Like the WoT books)… which means if you have a Platinum account, that’s something like 11 bucks for one credit, maybe 15 if you have a Gold account. Very, very reasonable for 6 – 12 hours of narration. ;)

  3. @Genna: My guess would be yes, depending on how these books do :).

  4. Amanda says:

Hooray for the visit to Mysterious Galaxy! it’s on my calendar :)

  5. Aaron says:

I wonder how Tara will voice Tara…

  6. Paloma Doveny says:

Wow, didnt know about WFC. I wonder where tickets can be gotten when it is already sold out. My 35 year old son, said “Oh mom it will be the biggest geek convention ever with people dressed up like warlocks and stuff” I said, “no that sounds more like a SciFI convention behavior” Hope I’m right. Anyone else ever been? And is there any chance in the world of any of us finding each other there? Or maybe everyone there is “us”. I don’t know, it sounds fun. How many of you all live in SoCal?

  7. Paloma Doveny says:

Excuse me, I read Under Heaven which is up for the big WFC award but am mystified to not see House Name in the list of contenders as well. Under Heaven was a great read and utterly seamless, as all Kay’s work is. He is a master wordsmith. What is it about Canadian writers? But House Name, infinitely more complex and layered and arguably the best read of the year, and Michelle being a legendary spinner of tales. Michelle , your characters are so real it feels like the reader actually knows them. Just wanted to say that since only members can go to WFC and only if they already signed up. So I won’t be there, but enjoy SoCal Michelle, hit the beach and find a great vegetarian restaurant. Hope you run into lots of fans and friends. Aaaah it just occurred to me Under Heaven came out in November and House Name in January. Well I expect then that House Name will be on all the award lists next time.

So far, Audible has put out the first three. While I prefer to read, audiobooks are nice options when I’ll be in a relatively small space for a length of time (like driving to visit the folks or spending a few hours housecleaning).

  9. Miki says:

Oops…I hit enter too fast. Audible has the novella too, at the moment. And it’s free for members, although I’m sure it’s to tempt you to get the other ones. I did it backwards. :)

I am here to tell you that the Chronicles of Elantra Series on audio are AMAZING!!! As I public transportation commuter I don’t much read book as much as listen to them on my ipod. I came across your work by listening to “Cast in Moonlight” and fell in love with the stories, this happen just a month and a half ago and I already bought and finished all of the books that are available on audible.com (6 of them). I am going crazy here waiting for “Cast in Chaos”, and the ones after that on the series, to become available. Khristine Hvam does a marvelous job narrating the books, I just don’t want to do anything else other than to sit quietly and listen to her voice telling the stories that you wonderfully created.
I have been telling everyone about it and already got 5 people to buy the books on audible. Even my husband who is not much of a book reader (or listener) is hooked!
I would love to buy other series by you on audible so please.. please.. please, consider (with care) making it available :)
    Best regards, Nina.

I was so happy to see them on audible. I have been searching every so often since I have been a member of audible. And finally this time they were there… I did a happy dance when i seen them :)

  12. Lissa says:

I’m sad to say that as of 1/3/2012 that Audible still hasn’t released Cast in Ruin. I sent an email, but I haven’t received any information about when it will be available. Too sad!

  13. Sianika says:

I really hope the amazing Michelle Sagara/West will see this. I also hope that this is a non-spoiler question. My apologies if it is.

Ok, my question is: In the Elantra Cast In series, we have had a book about the Thalani, Barrani, Leotines (I hope I am spelling these correctly, I mean no disrespect if I am) a Tower, and maybe a Dragon book. Will we get an Aerian book? I ask because attention has been drawn to the fact Kaylin likes them the most, that she would be one if she had the choice.

  14. jamie coady says:

i have read all the cast books on audio. they are amazing! now the big question does anyone know if the book cast in peril is coming out in audio? i am a blind reader so don’t have much choice but to read audio so i really hope and pray it will be in audio.

  15. jamie coady says:

can’t wait for the next book but as i am a blind reader i am still worried if the next books are going to be released in audio.

  16. ElizabethN says:

hidden in the “get ready for fall’s biggest blockbuster” section of audible, which presents some of this fall’s releases — page 5 “the biggest romance” click go — about 4 titles down on the romance page is a link for Cast in Shadow, the blurb though is this —

The reviews say it all for Michelle Sagara’s Chronicles of Elantra, narrated by the incomparable Khristine Hvam. In her latest adventure Cast in Peril, out September 18, Private Kaylin Neva contemplates leaving her Elantra home.”

so I’m anticipating being able to buy Cast in Peril in audible audiobook on either 9/18 or 9/19.

  17. tina jagros says:

I too love the Audible series, but what up with not being able to buy them because we are in Canada!
Michelle lives here, why would we not be able to access all of them at the same time as those in the U.S.?

    Sorry but this is frustrating.

  18. Can’t get them All in uk either shouldn’t audible be audible. Same with mortal instruments and Cassandra’s books. I bought some on cd and it’s too expensive like this.

  19. michelle says:

I’m sorry =/. Harlequin has different publishing houses in different territories — and the houses act, in some ways, independently. They choose what is adopted by their markets. So although world English rights are sold to HLQ, the individual HLQs (UK, Australia, etc.) decide which books to pick up in their territories. I would be ecstatic if the audio books could be purchased anywhere. I had the rights to the first three, so all three are available. The rest, HLQ has the rights to.

  20. Sue says:

Michelle can we not do something. It’s so frustrating not being able to follow the rest of the cast books in audio. If you can offer advice I would be grateful. It’s not on really that the publishers region decides what we can purchase. It’s like big brother all the time!! I find it so frustrating that you can’t get these books outside of the US xxx
