Shining Court audiobook available today & state of November

Today, the third of the Sun Sword books is now avail­able in audio­book. The narrator is Eva Wilhelm — who thus far has narrated all of the West audiobooks.

November – and the latter half of October – were about dead­lines. Well, dead­line. I have finished the first Severn book, The Emper­or’s Wolves, and turned it in to Mira. (At this point, it will be sent to my editor, who will edit and ask for revi­sions that will add clarity to the book, because some­times (still), the things that are on the inside of my head have failed to reach the page.)

I am working on the next West novel, and will start working on the next Cast novel. And also, I have page proofs for the mass-market edition of First­born, which arrived in the mail yesterday, but have promised to mostly keep the whining to myself.

    @Joey: I had a great time in Dublin and am now angsting about New Zealand Worldcon next year. And page proofs T_T. Which I promised not to whine about.

    Yay! You rock! Here I am all antsy for the Cast book to ping on my Kindle, because it is pre-ordered of course, and here you are finished the promised Severn book and starting on the next Cast. Stay healthy and sane.

    The Sun Sword series was the most wonderful series I keep re reading. Severn is the least inter­esting char­acter you ever wrote about. Sorry, I have never liked him. Night­shade is still my favorite. Your work is so very good. Thankyou for giving me some­thing to keep me company. Take care of your­self, don’t overdo.

    I’m happy to hear about the progress on the books. Having to check page-proofs is grumble-worthy but it does mean another book will soon be ready for us readers to buy.
    I’m looking forward to reading Severn’s story. I find him a very inter­esting char­acter, from some of the hints in Kaylin’s books.

    I am excited to hear about Severn’s book! Out of curiosity, did having him as the narrator impact your percep­tion of him in the CAST series at all? I just think it would be inter­esting, espe­cially since that series is ongoing, and this one is set before them.

    @Darbie: I don’t expect the next West novel to be published until some­time in 2021 — it’s not finished yet. I am in the recur­rent start page 1 stage, although I have about 60k words which are good to go. The begin­ning is … not working for me, still =/. 

    THE EMPEROR’S WOLVES is a Sept. 2020 release. 

    @Karen: you have clearly never lived with me while I’m proof-reading page proofs :D

    @Taylor: No. But I will say this: this is the first cast-related book that is multi-view­point. Severn is not … as pene­trable or talk­a­tive as Kaylin, so it’s actu­ally hard to view­point him for an entire book.

    Yayy!! The Emper­or’s Wolves! I’ve been waiting forever for Severn’s story. =D So happy that I’ll read them in October 2020 (Bookde­pos­i­to­ry’s release date is 13 Oct 2020).

    Oh, I wish I had read the above before going off to visit friends for Thanks­giving Day – there are I think two sets of your books in the friends’ house, [and they also have the ebooks…] and Jan 1 or Jan 2 the year there;s discus­sion of your books, as an annual thing! (one of the friends, who’s currently in Hawaii, was disap­pointed with War “It’s too short!” she complained, “It should have been LONGER!” )

    -Multiple- Severn books?? 

    And no Essaylien & vicinity books next year, but two Elantra books,.…

    @Paula: The first book in the new West series is due in July/August of 2020 — and it’s not nearly finished yet. I had to go back and take notes and reread because, hmmm, some of the rele­vant infor­ma­tion is contained in books that were published 20+ years ago (and there­fore written 20+ years ago as well), and I want the right start to the last arc — but the End of Days (which is now called The Burning Crown) *is* wider; it involves both the hunters and the Dominion. So: more like Sun Sword, and less focused on Terafin/Jewel.

    With Severn, I had 2 stories I could write. The first: Severn joins the wolves. The second: Severn gets his weapon. Neither of these would have existed if not for the pixel project charity drive — because one of the charity offer­ings was: short story prompt. But, well. Chapter seven made clear that the Severn story wasn’t a short story unless I wanted to trun­cate it Right There. 

    And… I didn’t, because I under­stood the shape of the first mission, and it relies on the previous chap­ters =/. The end to which I was writing — and to which I’m still writing — needed a first case like this one.

    So — the next two years is going to be very writing full. And panic, although those often go hand-in-hand

    I’m currently listening to the first book in this set. Is there anywhere online where there is a world guide? I feel like I need a decent intro to the world to help me under­stand every­thing that goes on.

    @Celina: There isn’t, that I know of =/. I can answer ques­tions that arise but BROKEN CROWN, espe­cially, is a bit infor­ma­tion dense. I’d almost suggest the SACRED HUNT as grounding in the world, but — it’s Hunter kingdom, and much of that is not as rele­vant, cultur­ally, to the Dominion =/.

    Do you Michelle think the Blog you wrote January 2, ‑6th, 2012 prior to Skir­mish being published would help? It was a summary for those who hadn’t read all of the Sun Sword. Since I reread in order I always reread the blog before I start Skirmish.

    @Mary: I think that’s “story so far”, which tries to cover all of Jewel’s events throughout the series — so it’s largely spoiler, but… I’m not sure it contains the general world-building infor­ma­tion without the spoilers, if that makes sense?

    That makes perfect since. I can’t imagine not reading every­thing you have written. I have now read all the Sun Sword, House Wars and Cast books four or five times. I’m about to start the Hunt Brothers Stories for a third time, as I wait for Cast in Wisdom which I pre-ordered at Barnes and Noble. Thank you so much for hours and hours of pleasure.
