Cast in Deception, Chapter One

Posted in Cast, Elantra, writing, chapters.

To those who celebrate, Happy Holidays!

I have been writing, but at the moment, have very little to show for it; my short Severn story is now 28k words and not finished.

I hope to finish it before the New Year, but in the frenetic, panicked busy work of holiday preparations, I am not sure how feasible this is.

Chapter one of Cast in Deception is here: Cast in Deception 01.

Re: audiobook versions: there appears to be a physical box of 13 CDs, but the downloadable version doesn’t seem to be available on iTunes yet, or rather, the link to it doesn’t seem to be available there. I’ll update those links when we’re closer to pub date.

So the audiobook links look slightly different: the first set are for the physical CD, because that has a fixed ISBN. The downloadable audiobook links (which is all of one at the moment) are below that.

  2. Tchula says:

Yay, I’m so looking forward to Cast in Deception! And I love your not-so-short stories, so please carry on…but give yourself time to enjoy the holidays, too! I’m off to celebrate with the in-laws today, then my folks tomorrow. Fun times ahead, and oh so much good food! ;-D

  3. Zia says:

Happy Holidays to you and yours as well! Thank you for posting the first chapter! I cannot wait for Cast in Deception. Also, thank you for keeping us updated with your progress! It’s always a highlight of my day to see a new post from you.

  4. michelle says:

I’m off for Christmas Eve dinner — my mother-in-law is Finnish, and they celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve. Which worked out well for us, as my family celebrates on the actual day, so the negotiation of Christmas and family wasn’t an issue.

Mostly, I’m fretting about War, but my editor hopes to be ready to discuss it in January.

  5. ralph walker says:

Hyvää Joulus!; Happy Christmas!; Merry Holidays!; and the Best in the New Year!

Leave off the working. Don’t fret over anything but, did you bring enough food for the holiday feast.

Enjoy the down time, as best you can. Rest and recharge.

See you in the New Year!!!

  6. hsmyers says:

Enjoy the festivities! Try and be like a violin, you know — fretless :)

Merry, Happy, Prosperous, Love, Family and Present filled time

  11. michelle says:

    Thank you all <3.

I know you’re patient and forgiving — but I also know, as a reader, how frustrating it can be when series are abandoned (by publisher, by author) or when there’s a multiple year gap between books.

  12. Laura Nichols says:

    Thanks for the Christmas gift!

One question: In the first sentence, should Eddorian be Annarion?

It’s possible,” he said, his emphasis bordering on sarcasm,
“that the High Court could be talked into believing that
Mandoran, Eddorian, and Karian have no interest in ruling.
There is nothing in the Empire that could induce the High
Court to believe that Sedarias does not.”

  13. David Loveless says:

  21. Debbie H says:

Merry Christmas, THANK YOU for the wonderful present. I pre-ordered from Audible and have been counting the days. 28 left. Hope you have a great time with your family and enjoy, time enough to worry about deadlines and schedules in the new year.

  22. Chris C. says:

    Eeeeee! Thank you. :)

  23. michelle says:

@Laura: No, it’s Eddorian. Annarion is taking the test because he wants to, or feels it’s his duty to, rule; they’re speaking mostly of the rest of the cohort, or rather, those members of the cohort that would be unlikely to take the test, pass it, and attempt to wrest control of their family lines from those who now hold it.

  24. Christy says:

Yay! I preordered Cast in Decsception. We love this series!

  25. KA says:

Just preordered! This is my favourite series, so I’m always excited about a new release!

  26. Donna Mould says:

I haven’t been able to pre-order yet as Amazon doesn’t have the kindle version up yet. Is there a date yet? Or should I just get the paperback?

  27. Zia says:

    @Donna

Not sure if this helps, but I managed to order a kindle and paperback copy from Amazon (US) back in May 2017. I did, since I have no idea if we use the same version of Amazon, go through all of their sites, because I was curious. With the exception of the Australia site, all the rest showed kindle books available. You might have to click the “see x formats and editions” tag, but every site but the one mentioned above showed a kindle version. Good luck!

  28. Gayla says:

Harlequin has preview for ch. 1 – 3. This book becomes better with every chapter! I am eagerly awaiting the for the 23rd to read the entire thing!

  29. Donna Mould says:

Thanks Zia. Amazon still has no kindle edition that I can see on any of its sites. Only the audiobook.

  30. SueM says:

Amazon (Australia) only shows the audiobook (dammit!) but ElizabethN’s link shows it in the US store. I also tried iTunes (AU) and it’s not showing there. :(

It might be that Australia has to wait an extra week as we did last time.

  31. SueM says:

I have just found it in iTunes AU with the release date of February 1.

  32. Donna Mould says:

Thanks Sue. I’ll check closer to the date. I’m still reading Sanderson’s Oathbringer so it will be a little while before I can read anyone.

  33. David Youngs says:

My local chain bookstore had 8 copies of CiD on the shelf today.

They also had more copies of some of the older books than they had last week.

Don’t look for me fo the rest of the night.
